Preventive dentistry is dental care that helps maintain good oral health. It’s a combination of regular dental check-ups along with developing good habits like brushing and flossing. Taking care of your teeth starts early in childhood and extends throughout the course of your life.

REGULAR CHECK-UPS WITH YOUR DENTIST
Regular exams are an important part of maintaining your oral health. We’ll carefully inspect every aspect of your oral health during your regular visits, taking into account any changes or signs of damage at the earliest stages possible so that treatment is easy and fast.
DAILY BRUSHING, FLOSSING, AND MOUTHWASH
To maintain a healthy smile, brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to remove food particles and plaque. Don’t forget to floss daily to clean between your teeth and along the gumline where your brush can’t reach. Adding mouthwash can provide extra protection and freshness.
BALANCED DIET
Eating a balanced diet, and trying to avoid extra-sugary treats can help maintain your health. Nutritious foods such as raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese, or fruit can help keep your smile healthy.
FLUORIDE
Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, helps prevent tooth decay by making the surface of your teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities.
SEALANTS
Ask your dentist about dental sealants, protective plastic coatings that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.
MOUTHGUARDS/NIGHTGUARDS
Custom designed mouthguards and nightguards are made of flexible plastic and molded to fit the shape of your teeth. They may help reduce the symptoms of teeth grinding, clenching and/or jaw pain at night and protect your teeth while playing sports.

What are the benefits of preventive dentistry?

    • Lowers risk for developing tooth decay, gum disease, and more serious dental problems.
    • Helps promote good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing.
    • Early identification of dental problems may help minimize treatment and cost.
    • Enables your dentist to do a full exam of your mouth, jaw, neck, etc. to identify any related problems.
    • Helps reduce dental problems related to some chronic medical conditions. Diabetes, osteoporosis, certain cancers, and eating disorders can all have an effect on dental and oral health. For people with chronic conditions, regular preventive dental care is an important part of whole person health.

Emergency Dentistry

If you experience a dental emergency, be sure to call our practice as soon as possible. If you need immediate attention after hours, call our emergency phone number and our on-call staff member will help you. If you are unable to reach our office during an emergency, dial 911.

We are here to help you, any time, any day. When your dental health is at risk, we will do everything we can to make sure that you’re treated as soon as possible. While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen, and it’s important to know how to take care of your teeth no matter what. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth
  • Broken jaw
  • Permanent tooth knocked out
  • Object caught between teeth
  • Severe toothache

Cosmetic Restorations

Cosmetic dentistry helps patients retain or create smiles they are happy with.  There is often a close correlation between restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.  When we use cosmetic restorations, we restore function to a tooth and at the same time, create an aesthetically pleasing smile for a patient.

Most of the restorative dental procedures we do in our office can also be cosmetic.  For instance, when a patient needs a filling and it happens to be on a tooth towards the front of the mouth, they often choose a composite, or tooth colored filling over a silver-colored amalgam filling.  Using a composite filling protects the tooth from further decay (restores its function), but it also provides a more natural appearance for a patient’s smile.

Another example of restorative dentistry being linked with cosmetic dentistry happens when we use our same day crown machine to design and fashion a crown to strengthen and support a tooth rather than using a gold crown.  Gold crowns, while strong and durable, don’t have the aesthetic appearance that ceramic crowns have.  While Dr. Albers sometimes recommends use of a gold crown, ceramic crowns often provide a good option for patients to restore function to a tooth and to protect it, while at the same time maintaining a natural looking smile.

Whether we talk about fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, or dentures, all of these procedures can serve a dual purpose of being both restorative and cosmetic.  We provide information and recommendations to patients to help them determine which procedures work best for them.

Restorative Dental Care

Although our primary goal is to prevent dental problems before they arise, Dr. Albers has extensive experience in restorative dental care, or in other words, fixing dental problems.

Pediatric Dentistry

Kids need the same type of care that adults need, including regular cleanings and exams. As a general dental practice, we offer pediatric dental services for kids, including fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
